When Being Helpful Makes You the Bottleneck
One of the harder lessons I’ve learned as a leader: you can become the bottleneck by being helpful.
You step in when something gets stuck. Make the decision. Resolve the disagreement. Take something off someone’s plate.
Each time, there’s a good reason. And the immediate problem gets solved.
But over time, people start waiting for you. Decisions come back to your desk. You find yourself wondering why the team isn’t taking more ownership, even as you keep taking it back.
I’ve caught myself doing this.
The uncomfortable part is learning to stay involved without immediately stepping in. Asking someone what they recommend before offering your answer. Letting them work through a difficult conversation. Being clear about what they can decide without you, then supporting them when they do.
That takes patience, especially when you can see a faster way.
In my operating and coaching work, I keep coming back to a question:
What am I doing for the team that the team needs to learn to do for itself?
Sometimes the next stage of growth starts there.
